The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has made call to the government to postpone the 2021 local government elections. In a Press conference held on the 14th January 2021, the party President Julius Malema has cited the novel coronavirus second wave as the major reason for their call to postpone elections to 2024.
Malema further stated that it will be very difficult to campaign and engage prospective voters with lockdown and measures put in place to curb the spreed of the virus in place.
“The party will resume with engagements with other political parties and stakeholders regarding the postponement of election” Malema stated
Local government elections are scheduled to be held in South Africa between 3 August and 3 November 2021.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has strongly expressed its views in the past that the 2021 local government elections should go ahead as planned, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
