The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against countries opening schools amid high local transmission of the novel Coronavirus.
Speaking to the media Mike Ryan WHO Health Programme Executive Director said “The best and safest way to reopen schools is in the context of low community transmission that has been effectively suppressed by a broad based comprehensive strategy”.
Dr Mike Ryan has warned that schools should not be turned into a political football game, it’s not fair on children. The WHO remarks comes in a time were teacher unions have called on the immediate closure of schools heading to the Covid-19 peak.
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) during their special National Executive meeting resolved to call on the Department of Education to close schools. The Union is set to meet with DBE on Wednesday to discuss issues relating to the impact of covid-19 in schools.
