As calls for closure of schools to reduce the spread of novel Coronavirus gains momentum countrywide. With some schools having had to close down for decontamination more than once. Parents and Unions have once more called on Minister Angie Motshekga to reconsider closing schools to save lives.
Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) have thrown their weight behind calls by South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu), National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of SA (Naptosa) and Public Servants Association (PSA), and Congress of South African Students (Cosas) for closure of schools during the peak period of Covid-19.
President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing a virtual public imbizo on Wednesday night said “We are going to sit back and listen very, very carefully to all the key role players about the reopening of schools. Losing an academic year, to us, cannot be weighed up against the lives we must lose. Lives are more important”
South Africa has recorded 12 757 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which had now taken SA’s Coronavirus tally to 311 049 cases, with 4 453 deaths recorded as of 15 July 2020.
